Book One in the Newcastle Saga
“The Bourne Identity meets Blade Runner.” – Dawn H.
Handsome, debonair, and extraordinarily rich, Rolland Newcastle abruptly leaves the life of a fame to become a social recluse, shunning the life he once ruled. Years later, he breaks free of his self-imposed exile for a late night walk in the megacity of Heavensport. Someone is waiting, determined to add him to the list of fatal “accidents” that have plagued his family and friends. Stripped of everything he has relied upon, can he survive or will his accident take millions of with him?
In the amazing megacity of Heavensport, robots of every shape and size, leave the 786 million inhabitants free for play, love, and to seek their happiness.
Rolland inherited his troubles from his ancestors, the legal owners of the beautiful planet of New Jerusalem. After cryrosleeping for 223 years, they found that technological advances had allowed squatters’ ships to make the journey in just 3.5 years.
Arriving 200 years later, they found an established world that didn’t want them. The Fall of Heaven was just the start.
Background
The remnant, the true owners of New Jerusalem came close to being exterminated. With control over their prosperous planet, they set about trying to create a utopian society that is just and peaceful. Robots do the hard work allowing the citizens of the megacities free to seek fun and activities.
The problem with all societies, from utopian to dystopian, is that there are still disgruntled and striving people in them mucking things up. Some think it would be better if they assumed control of everything. Humanity would be great but for all the humans.
Themes
The science fiction novel, The Fall of Heaven, intricately weaves themes of survival, identity, and the consequences of past actions against a backdrop of a technologically advanced society. The protagonist, Rolland Newcastle, once a celebrated figure, isolates himself from his former life but is soon thrust back into it when he is targeted by an unknown assailant. This situation compels him to confront his troubled past, where he is forced to forego the advanced technology he uses to navigate the dangers of Heavensport. The narrative also reveals Rolland's ancestral history with the planet New Jerusalem, which adds depth to his current struggles in this megacity.
Themes of Identity and Transformation
Rolland's internal struggle with his identity, particularly as a planet-heir, called The Remnant, is central to the narrative. The story illustrates his evolution as he confronts his past and fights for his life amidst hidden dangers.
The Fall of Heaven is a gripping tale that encapsulates themes of survival and identity in a richly imagined future. Rolland's journey is fraught with danger and self-discovery, making the narrative a compelling exploration of human nature in a technology-dominated society.
Reviews
"Exciting/riveting novel that kept my interest with all its twists and exciting descriptions. Im not a sci-fi follower normally but I really enjoyed this.
I was drawn in by the descriptive language and characters I felt like I was getting to know. A fun read!" - Linda W.
"A strong and powerful vision of the future! The descriptions of the technology and its use (and misuse!) are stunningly detailed and incredibly prescient. The story moves along at a great pace. I definitely look forward to future installments." - Michael C.
"Author David Grunwell takes the reader to a distant planet in the future. His vision of technology, and how it is used in the future, is extraordinary, yet very believable. He has captured not only the technology of the future, but more importantly to me, how people of the future interact with that technology. While reading Fall of Heaven, I was reminded of Jules Verne’s works and how in the late 1800’s he created a realistic glimpse into the future." - David B. Gilmore, Author - Operation Sapphire
"VG story, writing, and imaginative plot and sci-tech. I recommend this book, and hope this turns into a series. Great work." - Kent I.
